A team dispatched by the national leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to probe the sexual harassment and violence incident in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas district, was halted by police in Rampur on Friday. Despite protests, the team was unable to proceed and eventually returned.
The BJP delegation, headed to Sandeshkhali, faced obstruction in Rampur as police cited Section 144 and limited the number of individuals allowed to proceed. BJP leaders and Union ministers engaged in heated arguments with law enforcement, demanding access, but were denied permission to continue.
BJP national president JP Nadda formed a high-level six members team to investigate the Sandeshkhali incident, which included Bengal BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul. However, security measures in Sandeshkhali prevented their visit, prompting protests by BJP workers and leaders against the Trinamool government's handling of the situation.
Union Minister Annapurna Devi was made the convenor of this high level committee. Apart from Union Minister Pratima Bhowmik, other members of the committee include MP Sunita Duggal, MP Kavita Patidar, MP Sangeeta Yadav and Brijlal (Rajya Sabha MP and former Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh).
